The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is the connection between your jaw and the temporal bones in the skull.  It is one of the most dynamic joints in your body, capable of moving up, down, left, right, forward, and back.  This is the joint that allows you to talk, chew, and yawn.

Problems in this joint and the muscles that control it can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw
  • Locking jaw
  • Difficulty chewing
  • Headaches
  • Earaches
  • Tension in the jaw
  • Difficulty completely opening the mouth

This disorder can be caused by a number of factors, some of them more obvious than others.

At Harder Dental Corporation, we have several treatment options for these disorders.  If the problem is being caused by tension in the muscles, an injection of Botox may be able to relax the muscles responsible for the condition.

Another option is the NTI-Tension Suppression system.  Originally developed to combat migraines, this small acrylic device fits over the two front teeth. The canines and molars are prevented from coming in contact, reducing strain on the joint and preventing clenching or grinding.  This FDA approved device offers treatment without the need for injections or surgery.

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, please make an appointment for your free consultation at Harder Dental Corporation right away.
